The cruise industry is growing rapidly, creating many opportunities for employees to build rewarding long-term cruise ship careers.
Although many crewmembers are happy with the cruise ship job they have onboard, others have had their sights on getting promoted even before they were hired. Once you land your first job in the cruise industry, you will understand that there is more to getting promoted than just putting in a few contracts.
Cruise lines prefer to promote from within whenever possible, but they also hire externally.
They scoop up quality applicants that may have worked for other cruise lines or have relevant experience and education that makes them ideal candidates for even supervisory positions.
Just because you are good at your job, doesn’t mean that you will automatically be promoted to a supervisory cruise ship job. There may be additional education, training and skills that are required for the job. You may need more education or experience in the job you are currently doing in order to fully understand the scope of the role of supervisor.
If you feel you are qualified to get promoted then talk to your Head of Department and utilize the onboard HR Department. Although a decision may need to be made at the head office level, the shipboard level is where the real decision is made. Let them know you are interested in a supervisory position, including giving them your resume and cover letter. Sometimes it’s also about being at the right place at the right time!
